Moving into Care

Moving into Rest Home care can be quite a process for everyone involved, with many considerations.

The first step is to have a Needs Assessment, which is completed by the Needs Assessment and Service Co-ordination Service (NASC). You can have your GP refer you, or call NASC on 0800 725 463.

Eldernet is a great resource with plenty of useful information as well as showing current vacancies in Aged Care facilities at the various levels of care.

The Health New Zealand website has comprehensive information around the steps involved with moving into Rest Home care and what you need to know.

If you need long-term residential care in a hospital or rest home, you may be able to get a Residential Care Subsidy from the Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora to contribute towards the cost of care. The Residential Care Subsidy is administered Ministry of Social Development (‘WINZ’).
